No Way Home - A Flash Fiction Set in a City Where Vampires Rule

I wrote this a while back while exploring genres other than romance, which I usually write. It turned out decent. Decided to publish it :)

Darkness surrounded the entire city as the girl continued walking home. Occasionally, a slight breeze would pass by her, scaring the hell out of her.

Years ago, her parents said their city was beautiful. The nightlife was incredible, and parties happened each day. Couples roamed around the place, and restaurants were always packed with families.

But everything changed when the bloodthirsty creatures came to their city.

Things went from best to worst in what felt like minutes. Their beautiful city became home to hundreds of dead bodies. Many people became the snack for those red-eyed monsters that night.

Humans assumed maybe they would leave once they got what they wanted. But the vampires had other plans. They fell in love with the city and never left.

Now, almost a decade later, their city was like a graveyard. Humans became mere snacks instead of independent creatures who deserved to live. Everyone hated it, but no one knew exactly how powerful they were. So no one ever dared to go against them.

People were terrified to leave their houses even in broad daylight. Getting out of the house after 6 in the evening was pretty much giving yourself to those bloodsuckers.

This is why the girl regretted going to the library to study after school. She completely lost track of time. When the library finally closed, she realized it was well past seven in the evening. And that is when the first wave of panic hit her.

Now she was stuck walking home alone, hoping she would get there safely. Her bag felt heavy on her shoulder, and she got scared of her footsteps on the road. The occasional sound of something falling made her suck in a deep breath. Still, somehow she managed to walk with shaky steps.

A heart-wrenching scream tore through the surroundings, immediately making her stiffen. She tried to look around but was too scared to move anywhere from her spot.

A sudden breeze flew past her, but it was too quick for her to notice it was not normal air. Two blood-red eyes glowed in the darkness, smirking while looking at the girl walking alone.

'Another victim of those cruel creatures,' the girl thought to herself. Minutes later, she continued walking, completely aware of the company she had.

The next few minutes passed by too quickly. A hand came from behind, pulling the girl back towards someone. Before she could let out a scream, another hand covered her mouth. Tears finally came down her face as cold laughter fell on her ears.

"Stupid little humans. Roaming around with such delicious smelling blood." A voice whispered in her ears, making her panic. She thrashed around but to no use. The grip on her waist only tightened till she practically couldn't breathe.

Her struggle stopped as she felt unbearable pain in her neck. The vampire continued drinking her blood until there was just her corpse left.

Another death. Another win for the vampires. The girl's parents kept worrying the entire night. They hoped by some means their little girl would come back alive.

But the only thing that came back the next day was her dead body, completely drained of blood. Her parents cried for hours while mourning over the death of their only daughter.

There was no way out of the mess they were in. Humans didn't stand a chance in this debate of who was more powerful. Will this ever end? everyone in the city wondered. But there was no way out, and no guarantee that there ever would be.
