Writing While Healing - Indie Author Interview: Nicole Goodwin

Welcome to the newest post in Writing While Healing, a series where I speak with indie authors who’ve found light through writing during their darkest times.

Today, I’m honored to feature Nicole Goodwin, an indie author. You can learn more about Nicole here.

Please introduce yourself!

Nicole Goodwin/GOODW.Y.N. is an Interdisciplinary Artist and Writer living and working in NYC.

Please tell us a little about yourself and the kind of stories you write.

I write all types of work including fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry.

Please share a bit about your mental health journey, as much as you are comfortable with :)

Much of my mental health journey consists of inpatient hospital care, juggling through a myriad of medications, and battling the family court system for custody of my daughter. That was 16 years ago of dealing with survivors guilt and trauma from Sexual Abuse and Rape before and during my life in the military.

How has your mental health influenced your writing process or creativity?

It gives me a story to tell, demons to fight, and sometimes angels to embrace.

Do you find writing to be healing, challenging, or a bit of both?

A lot of both. Healing for me is wading through muddy waters to get to an oasis.

Has your experience with mental health shaped the themes or characters in your stories?

Sometimes.

Are there any writing routines, boundaries, or self-care habits that help you stay grounded?

I set a schedule in between working to conduit chores, converse with friends and allow myself days off.

What advice would you give to other writers who have similar struggles as you?

See above.

Have you ever taken breaks from writing to focus on your mental health?

Yes. In 2003-2007, 2014-2018.

What’s something you wish more people understood about being a writer with mental health struggles?

That having mental health issues isn't and shouldn't be a choice in order to write well.

Is there anything else you'd like to share with the readers?

Chronic pain affects my mental. So I have to juggle and somewhat separate my mood from my physical pain.

Where can readers connect with you and your work? (Socials, website, books, etc.)
