When the Moon Disappears - A heartbreaking flash fiction

Prompt - Every night the moon disappears for one minute, in that minute no one can lie.

It was a known occurance.

Every night, the moon disappeared for a minute. In that minute, no one can lie.

Such a small amount of time, yet enough to ruin lives or start new ones.

Every night, that one minute, I allowed him to break my heart. Again and again.

"Do you love me?" I would ask.

"Yes." He always said.

"Then stay." I would beg.

But he never did. And never waited long enough to say why he couldn't. To let me tell him how I felt.

I watched him with new lovers every day.

Yet every night, he stood at the balcony and told me he loved me when the moon disappeared.

Why? Why did he say that if I meant nothing? If he would never be mine?

"I won't be here tomorrow." I said every night, tearful as I watched him leave.

Yet every night, I waited. And he came. He lied until he couldn't. When I asked, he said I didn't matter.

Until the moon disappeared and then forced him to confess.

I thought it would stop hurting. That I would walk away. But I had million questions. And one minute wasn't enough to ask all of them.

One night, I said nothing. I watched him stare at the moon and stayed silent. Why should I ask anyway? I knew what he would say.

"You won't ask today? He questioned, eyes searching for answers.

But I had nothing left to say. No hope for him staying.

"Do you love me?" He asked when the moon disappeared, desperation pooling in his voice.

"Does it matter?" I answered.

I couldn't say I loved him. Because it was killing me. Because seeing him walk away again and again was destroying me.

"We can't be anything." He finally said. Finally allowed the fear to settle. To acknowledge the forbidden nature of our love.

"You never really tried to be anything anyway." I said, smiling despite the tears.

I walked away that night. I heard him say something, perhaps my name. Perhaps a plea. It didn't matter.

Everything changed after that night.

We tortured each other every night. Never trying to change anything.

When he missed a day, I crumbles to the floor begging.

"You didn't come." I demanded next night, unable to hide my desperation.

"I might not be able to soon." He whispered, eyes focused on the moon. As if he was waiting for it to disappear. To have a chance to stop lying.

"Ask me." He said when it did.

"Do you love me?" I asked foolishly.

"Yes. Yes, I love you." He said, tears streaming down his face.

"Then stay." I begged. Again.

"One day. I promise one day I will. Promise you will wait." He demanded.

"I don't know if I can. Loving you is killing me." I said honestly.

Our eyes met, one minute feeling shorter than it ever did.

"Loving you is the only way I can live. Please wait. Please stay."

It was the first time he asked me to stay. That I believed him when he said he loved me.
